THE MISTAKES MANY PARENTS MAKE WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR CHILD’S MEDICATION DOSAGE

Hey Mums and Dad’s,

We know it’s never fun when our little ones are unwell and giving them a little medication can go a long way in their recovery!

That’s why we want to make sure you’re giving them the correct dosage so that they’re not missing out, which can sometimes happen simply due to a lack of understanding of how to correctly administer medication.

Here’s what our Rescueblue paramedics want you to know about administering the correct dosage.

AIR BUBBLES AND MEDICATION:

They might seem innocuous, but air bubbles forming in the syringe can impact the dose your child receives.

Here’s a breakdown of why they happen and how to tackle them like a pro:

1. Drawing Technique: When you pull back the plunger too fast or at an awkward angle, you risk introducing pesky air bubbles into the mix.

2. Vial Entrapment: If the needle isn’t fully submerged in the liquid when you insert it into the vial, air can sneak in.

3. Medicine Characteristics: Some medications, because of their viscosity or tendency to foam, are more prone to trapping air bubbles.

To minimize the chances of air bubbles messing with your child’s medication:

1. Ensure the needle is completely submerged before you start drawing the medicine. Take it slow, and give the syringe a gentle tap to coax out any trapped air before you administer it.

2. Draw a little extra medication than needed, then gently push the syringe back to meet your child’s precise dose requirement.

It might seem like a small detail, but paying attention to air bubbles can make a difference in ensuring your child gets the right dose of medication.
